With his upcoming release 'Shakedown', Fantomacs reimagines a modern Electro-Jazz classic from the Canadian band Four80East, who recently brought the track to life in their Barn Sessions, Part 1. Fantomacs’ version sets itself apart through an extraordinary approach: the entire arrangement – from performance and recording to mixing and mastering – is crafted by a single artist.
This one-man interpretation pays homage to the original while carving out its own unique identity. Central to the production is the innovative use of the TEControl breath controller, a cutting-edge tool that brings authentic dynamics and expressive phrasing to the performance. From soulful brass to lush string passages, the instrument modeling feels strikingly real, infused with nuance and depth that echo the energy of a live ensemble.
By blending physical modeling technology with artistic precision, Fantomacs transforms 'Shakedown' into a deeply personal statement – both a tribute and a fresh exploration of Electro-Jazz fusion. The result is a track that carries the groove and sophistication of Four80East while showcasing Fantomacs’ signature style: meticulous sound design, emotional intensity, and an unmistakable sense of flow.
'Shakedown' is more than a cover – it’s a testament to the power of innovation, musical craftsmanship, and the expressive possibilities of modern performance technology.

Fantomacs has always been a difficult artist to pin down. The Berlin-born, Switzerland-based producer Joerg Peters has built a reputation on defying boundaries, moving fluidly between electronic, jazz, ambient, funk, and even orchestral worlds with an ease that suggests he belongs to none and all of them at once. With “Shakedown”, he delivers one of his most striking statements yet, a sleek, cinematic reimagining that feels both mysterious and dangerously suave, as if it were written for a James Bond film that hasn’t been made yet.
With “Shakedown”, Fantomacs has delivered more than a cover, he’s crafted a piece of art that bridges worlds. It’s bold, atmospheric, and impossibly stylish, the sound of an artist taking full control of his vision and creating something that lingers long after the final note fades.

Fantomacs' reinterpretation of Shakedown is a masterclass in sonic craftsmanship, offering a fluid blend of classic electro-jazz textures with a modern, almost cinematic sensibility. Right from the start, the soundstage feels wide and intentional, with each element placed just where it needs to be to let the groove breathe and build. The use of physical modeling instruments and breath control adds a remarkable human touch — the brass swells and string phrasing have an organic feel that’s often missing in electronically produced jazz. It’s a thoughtful arrangement, clearly handled by someone who respects the source material but isn’t afraid to mold it into something personal. What stands out most is how naturally the track evolves; the melodic lines move with purpose, the layers come and go with tasteful restraint, and the production is clean without losing warmth. There's a rich musicality at play here that transcends the one-man format — it genuinely sounds like a tight ensemble working in sync. If anything, bringing a bit more low-end presence into the mix could give the groove even more weight, grounding the track with a deeper pulse. Still, this is an elegant and soulful reimagination that both honors and refreshes the original with real artistry.
However, I would like to express my grateful satisfaction in being able to participate, with a humble opinion, about your most beautiful and precious creation in this musical art. My most sincere congratulations. |

This track feels like a gentle glimmer of hope in the heart of night; when melody steps in, it explores silence and embraces your solitude. Each note is a point of unseen light, and the space between them is a pause to touch the inner truth. Your track is being added to my playlists today ... |

First of all, I really like the range of instrumentation on this - it’s clear you’re a talented producer and live musician, which is refreshing to hear. The track is well produced and has a lovely 80s/90s chillout feel, a bit like Kinobe’s 'Slip Into Something More Comfortable'. |
| Rhythm Passport (Beats Magazine) |
This piece has a smoothness that is easy to take in, with sonorities that are appealing and carefully handled. The arrangement suggests a polished and thought-out direction. Still, the music lands more in ambient jazz and pop, which does not fit our editorial scope. We are a world and global beats magazine, and our coverage centres on traditional, roots-based, and culturally grounded sounds. Nonetheless, it was good to hear this track, and thanks again for letting us listen to your work. |

Thank you for sharing your reimagining of “Shakedown” with us. It’s a very creative and professional production—the way you’ve used physical modeling instruments and a breath controller to give lifelike expression to brass and strings is impressive, and it does succeed in creating the feel of a live ensemble. The groove is strong, the sound design is polished, and the track balances tribute with innovation in a fresh and personal way. |

A very cool piece with fantastic instrumentation and a great rhythm that keeps it flowing smoothly. The saxophone stands out beautifully, adding warmth and character, while the drumming gives it a fun, laid-back groove. Altogether, it’s a track full of charm and musicality that’s easy to enjoy. While it might not be the right fit for a playlist, we’d love to add it to our own personal archive - thanks so much for sending it in! |

Thank you for sharing your track with me! I really like the groove and the overall sound of the production — it feels polished, engaging, and shows a lot of creativity in the way the elements are put together. The atmosphere you’ve built definitely has its own character and flow, which makes the track stand out. |

Out September 22, 2025
Fantomacs, the forward-thinking Electro-Jazz artist, is set to release his latest single Shakedown on September 22, 2025. The track reimagines a live classic from Canadian Electro-Jazz innovators Four80East, who recently performed the piece as part of their acclaimed Barn Sessions, Part 1.
