Behind the Scenes of 'Shakedown'

Fantomacs-coverart-Shakedown

Fantomacs, the forward-thinking Electro-Jazz artist, is set to release his latest single 'Shakedown' on September 22, 2025. The track reimagines a live classic from Canadian Electro-Jazz innovators Four80East, who recently performed the piece as part of their acclaimed 'Barn Sessions'.

What sets this cover apart is its remarkable creation process: every note, layer, and detail was performed, recorded, mixed, and mastered by one artist alone. Fantomacs takes the listener on a journey that blends homage with innovation, bringing new life to 'Shakedown' while staying true to its infectious groove and jazzy sophistication.

Fantomacs 'Shakedown' will be available on all major streaming platforms and as part of his growing collection of innovative Electro-Jazz releases on Bandcamp.

The Story of the 'Shakedown' Project

Back in 2001, the Toronto-based duo Four80East released 'Shakedown' -  a track that quickly became a staple of their distinctive blend of electronic grooves and jazz improvisation. Known for fusing tight rhythms with warm, melodic lines, Four80East carved out a unique spot in the Electro-Jazz world. Fast forward two decades: their recent 'Barn Sessions' live album revived 'Shakedown' in a fresh, organic setting, sparking new inspiration for artists and listeners alike.

One of those inspired was Fantomacs, a Germany/Switzerland-based artist equally fascinated by the crossroads of electronic innovation and jazz tradition. While Four80East thrives as a collaborative band, Fantomacs took on the challenge of reimagining 'Shakedown' as a one-man performance -handling every aspect of the music himself, from playing to mixing and mastering. The idea wasn’t just to cover the song, but to reinterpret it through modern tools while keeping its soulful essence intact.

To achieve this, Fantomacs leaned on cutting-edge instrument modeling technology. Imagine digital instruments so realistic they can capture the breath, phrasing, and emotion of a live musician. With the help of a new breath controller from Sweden’s TEControl, Fantomacs was able to “breathe” life into brass and string parts, making them feel alive rather than programmed. Alongside these expressive textures, modeled sounds of piano, Rhodes, bass, drums, and flute created the rhythmic and harmonic backbone.

The creative process unfolded like building a house: starting with a solid foundation of drums and bass, adding harmonic walls with piano and Rhodes, and decorating with layers of strings, vibraphone, and finally a vibrant brass section. Each instrument was carefully placed in a virtual concert hall, giving the track space and depth - as if a full band were playing live on stage.

In the end, what connects Four80East and Fantomacs is a shared love for groove, melody, and jazz fusion. What sets them apart in this project is the path: where Four80East bring the energy of a seasoned live duo and additional studio musicians, Fantomacs proves what’s possible when one artist harnesses technology to create the richness of an entire ensemble. 'Shakedown' becomes both a tribute and a bold experiment - a dialogue between tradition and innovation, Canada and Europe, band and soloist.

Deep-dive into the creative process

This fresh energy inspired Fantomacs to create a one-man interpretation of the piece - reimagined with cutting-edge technology and a deep commitment to expressive performance.

At the heart of this approach lies the integration of SWAM physical modeling instruments from Audio Modeling (Italy). These sophisticated virtual instruments, capable of replicating the nuances of real acoustic performance, were paired with the highly advanced TEControl breath controller (Sweden). This tool provided unparalleled expressive control, allowing Fantomacs to shape brass and string performances with natural phrasing, dynamics, and emotional depth.

Beyond the orchestral textures, other physical models played a crucial role: E-bass guitar, grand piano, drums, Rhodes E-Piano, and Jazz Flute were seamlessly integrated to maintain the authentic fusion-jazz character of the track.

The production unfolded entirely within Logic Pro X, beginning with the groove foundation of drums and bass. From there, harmonies and chord progressions were developed, followed by layers of piano, Rhodes, SWAM strings (violin, two violas, two cellos), and vibraphone. Finally, Fantomacs recorded and programmed Flugelhorn, Trumpet, Flute leads, and a full brass section (two trumpets, alto & tenor sax, trombone), all realized with individual SWAM instruments.

To enhance realism, each instrument was arranged and placed within a physical model of a classical hall, ensuring spatial accuracy, natural reflections, and a balanced stereo image. The final stage involved grouping, mixing, EQing, compression, and state-of-the-art mastering with tools from Native Instruments and Logic Pro X. Critical proof-listening sessions across studio monitors, loudspeakers, and physical speaker models ensured a polished and dynamic final sound.

Fantomacs has always been a difficult artist to pin down. The Berlin-born, Switzerland-based producer Joerg Peters has built a reputation on defying boundaries, moving fluidly between electronic, jazz, ambient, funk, and even orchestral worlds with an ease that suggests he belongs to none and all of them at once. With “Shakedown”, he delivers one of his most striking statements yet, a sleek, cinematic reimagining that feels both mysterious and dangerously suave, as if it were written for a James Bond film that hasn’t been made yet.

With “Shakedown”, Fantomacs has delivered more than a cover, he’s crafted a piece of art that bridges worlds. It’s bold, atmospheric, and impossibly stylish, the sound of an artist taking full control of his vision and creating something that lingers long after the final note fades.

Fantomacs' reinterpretation of Shakedown is a masterclass in sonic craftsmanship, offering a fluid blend of classic electro-jazz textures with a modern, almost cinematic sensibility. Right from the start, the soundstage feels wide and intentional, with each element placed just where it needs to be to let the groove breathe and build. The use of physical modeling instruments and breath control adds a remarkable human touch — the brass swells and string phrasing have an organic feel that’s often missing in electronically produced jazz. It’s a thoughtful arrangement, clearly handled by someone who respects the source material but isn’t afraid to mold it into something personal. What stands out most is how naturally the track evolves; the melodic lines move with purpose, the layers come and go with tasteful restraint, and the production is clean without losing warmth. There's a rich musicality at play here that transcends the one-man format — it genuinely sounds like a tight ensemble working in sync. If anything, bringing a bit more low-end presence into the mix could give the groove even more weight, grounding the track with a deeper pulse. Still, this is an elegant and soulful reimagination that both honors and refreshes the original with real artistry.

However, I would like to express my grateful satisfaction in being able to participate, with a humble opinion, about your most beautiful and precious creation in this musical art. My most sincere congratulations.

This track feels like a gentle glimmer of hope in the heart of night; when melody steps in, it explores silence and embraces your solitude.

Each note is a point of unseen light,

and the space between them is a pause to touch the inner truth.

First of all, I really like the range of instrumentation on this - it’s clear you’re a talented producer and live musician, which is refreshing to hear. The track is well produced and has a lovely 80s/90s chillout feel, a bit like Kinobe’s 'Slip Into Something More Comfortable'.

Rhythm Passport (Beats Magazine)

This piece has a smoothness that is easy to take in, with sonorities that are appealing and carefully handled. The arrangement suggests a polished and thought-out direction. Still, the music lands more in ambient jazz and pop, which does not fit our editorial scope. We are a world and global beats magazine, and our coverage centres on traditional, roots-based, and culturally grounded sounds. Nonetheless, it was good to hear this track, and thanks again for letting us listen to your work.

Thank you for sharing your reimagining of “Shakedown” with us. It’s a very creative and professional production—the way you’ve used physical modeling instruments and a breath controller to give lifelike expression to brass and strings is impressive, and it does succeed in creating the feel of a live ensemble. The groove is strong, the sound design is polished, and the track balances tribute with innovation in a fresh and personal way.

A very cool piece with fantastic instrumentation and a great rhythm that keeps it flowing smoothly. The saxophone stands out beautifully, adding warmth and character, while the drumming gives it a fun, laid-back groove. Altogether, it’s a track full of charm and musicality that’s easy to enjoy. While it might not be the right fit for a playlist, we’d love to add it to our own personal archive - thanks so much for sending it in!
